Summary: One delegate from Allegany Co., two from Washington Co. and about 12 from Frederick gathered in Frederick to nominate a candidate for Congress to oppose Union candidate Francis Thomas. They chose George Schley of Hagerstown after the nomination was turned down by Kunkel, Hamilton, and Lowe. The Examiner says the rebels are styling their candidate Schley as from the "Peace" party to escape "the dreadful responsibility of having inaugurated Civil War and broadcast ruin..." How can they call themselves a "Peace" party when they have stolen grain, waylaid passenger trains, robbed mail trains, etc., says the paper.

Summary: C. Rentch, a "violent" secessionist citizen of Washington County and son of Andrew Rentch, Esq., imprudently boasted in Williamsport that he was involved in the April 19th Baltimore riot and had killed a U.S. soldier with a stone. He said he could "whip" any six Union men. When asked by a Union man in Williamsport to dismount, C. Rentch drew a revolver and shot the man. Rentch was shot in return, tried to run away and was ultimately killed.

Summary: The Valley Register endorses the position taken by the Hagerstown Herald which says - if there was a way to save the Union without shedding blood, Union men would do it, but the "peace Disunionists" do not want to preserve the Union but to recognize the Southern Confederacy. They say it is the only way to restore "harmony." "Our town and county has a great many [Disunionists], who are busily engaged in distilling this kind of poison and diffusing it among loyal people." Beware of these Disunionists.
