Garlinger, Esq. was chosen as chairman and ten delegates were chosen for the County Convention (names supplied). The County Convention will select delegates to the State Convention in Baltimore which will send delegates to Chicago for the Republican National Convention and also choose a Republican electoral ticket for the state.

Summary: Letter to the editor from "A Boy in Blue" describes coming across a deserted store near "Coal (sic) Harbor" and the Confederate capital of Richmond. The store, owned by Brown and Pusley (sp?), was empty, but business papers were found scattered about and they showed that nine-tenths of the goods sold at the store were alcohol, mostly whiskey. The author of the letter gives some examples of orders sent to the firm and talks about the "spirit of Democracy that poured at the tapsters call from the oaken casks..."

Summary: The paper prints two articles from the La Crosse Democrat which is a staunchly Democratic paper. The first says, "Nominate another Abe Lincoln, and the country will produce another John Wilkes Booth.." The second says that the paper wishes to hang a Confederate flag next to the National flag, " - each being American and having floated over men whose bravery have never been surpassed."

Summary: Republican voters of the fourth district met to select ten representatives to the County Convention to be held in Hagerstown. N. J. Ditto was appointed president. The 10 delegates are named. It was learned that Wm. T. Hamilton favored secession and would vote in convention for Breckenridge. District 4 hopes that the U. S. Senate will refuse to admit Hamilton because of his stance. The Republicans of District 4 also expressed their support of Gen. Grant for president and said he was their first choice. The proceedings of the meeting should be sent to the Herald and Torch Light.
