[Transcription: "On Monday last, a battalion of 260 troops from the State of Indiana passed through this town [Hagerstown] on their way to Sharpsburg to join the 12th Indiana Regiment at that place."

Summary: Letter to the editors by Hagerstown Unionist, Oct. 25, 1861 in reference to Sec. of War Ex. Gov. Thomas' call "to raise four regiments for our Home Protection..."; praising the quick response from Washington Co. citizens and their "commendable patriotism" who enlisted in large numbers at headquarters in Frederick and Cumberland. New headquarters now in Hagerstown, suggesting Washington Co. companies be transferred to Hagerstown, part of the 4th Regt. rather than 1st Regt. which was to protect both Frederick and Washington Counties. "at least 1500 [men] have been mustered in the home and general service" from Washington Co.; they should be protecting our "long, imperiled river border," especially in winter.

"Remember on the 19th of April loyal citizens were intimidated with violence…"ten days" time were allotted to Union men to seal their lips." Accusing Secessionists of now appearing "as peace candidates." Reminding voters that those candidates "are the endorsers of those two notorious characters, John C. Breckinridge and E. Louis Lowe, both now living in VA.

Summary: Outerbridge Horsey, Esq. is the candidate of the Peace Party for the Senate of MD. He was heard to remark that all the bridges in Maryland from the Pennsylvania line to the Potomac should be burned to keep Northern troops off Maryland soil. While this opinion would be acceptable from an individual, it is questionable coming from someone who is a candidate for office from Frederick Co. The acts of Mr. Horsey in the legislature could potentially involve the state in "fearful agitation and embarrassment."
