Our Potomac Home Guard
Summary
Letter to the editors by Hagerstown Unionist, Oct. 25, 1861 in reference to Sec. of War Ex. Gov. Thomas' call "to raise four regiments for our Home Protection..."; praising the quick response from Washington Co. citizens and their "commendable patriotism" who enlisted in large numbers at headquarters in Frederick and Cumberland. New headquarters now in Hagerstown, suggesting Washington Co. companies be transferred to Hagerstown, part of the 4th Regt. rather than 1st Regt. which was to protect both Frederick and Washington Counties. "at least 1500 [men] have been mustered in the home and general service" from Washington Co.; they should be protecting our "long, imperiled river border," especially in winter.
