The Recent Outrage in This Town (October 9th, 1861)

Summary: Soldiers from the 1st MD Regt. from Baltimore "assaulted the Hotel of J. A. Wright, the barber-shop of John Wagoner and the Grocery Store of J. H. Cretin…" all located on N. Potomac Street in Hagerstown; damaged property and goods. Article claims the soldiers were inebriated and attacked the businesses after being "assaulted with stones by peace men." Also notes that "an invalid soldier named Bushnell, of one of the Massachusetts Regts" was also hit with a stone by "rowdies." "When the Traitors of the South undertook to subvert the great central Government of our nation, they set an example of mobocracy..."

Summary: The Schoolhouse in Smithsburg hosted a Union Convention to nominate District Officers; Nicholas Beard, Chairman; J. W. Barkdoll, Secretary. Jacob Hoffbine, H. W. Lyday, Jeremiah S. Besore appointed to draft governing rules which were unanimously adopted. Nominees for Magistrates, Constables, Supervisor named and voted upon. Meeting "adjourned to the square, where the people were addressed by their old fellow citizen, Daniel Witmer, Esq...admonished the people of Old Cavetown to stand by the Union no matter who be President, particularly Democrats..."

McClellan Guards (October 9th, 1861)

Summary: The McClellan Guards is a company of 90 men under the command of Capt. Alfred Schley of Liberty. The Guards were recently mustered into the "Public Guard Regiment" under Col. Wm. Louis Schley at Camp Hoffman, Baltimore. Some of the men are Frederick Co. residents. The Guards elected Alfred Schley as captain and J. P. Gleeson as first lieutenant.
