Summary: Letter to Citizen editor from "Caucasian", stating proposal, supported by Examiner, to expand probation for citizenship of "foreign" candidates to 21 years of age required a State convention to change law. Then Examiner states that a convention is needed to provide Negroes with same benefit. Asks why the Federal government is quick to espouse the benefits of U. S. citizenship, but then denies rights of loyal citizens, the slaveholders of MD.

Shooting of Mr. Wharton at Washington (April 25th, 1862)

Summary: Jesse B. Wharton, a prisoner in the jail at Washington, was shot and killed by a guard. He was the son of Dr. John O. Wharton and nephew of the Hon. John Thompson. His wife is the daughter of Col. Whiting, US Army. He was buried in Hagerstown.
