Movements of Troops (February 5th, 1862)

Summary: On Monday a battery consisting of 6 rifled field pieces with caissons and magazines and about 100 horses arrived from western New York. The battery was moved to the Barracks field where they pitched their Sibley tents and found shelter for the horses. A "splendid" troop of horse under Capt. Patterson arrived from Pittsburg. It had a light steel rifled swivel which was mounted on a powerful horse and was reputed to be a very effective weapon. This troop departed on a special train.

Summary: The account of a saber presentation at Camp "Broadhead" 2 miles north of Frederick City. Members of the Co. D, Third Michigan Cavalry, presented their commanding officer, Capt. J. B. Park, with a gold-mounted saber, sash and belt as a "token of their respect and confidence." The presentation was made by Acting Lt. C. F. Shepard. The text of the presentation was printed in the paper along with the reply of Park.

Summary: The grave of John Talbot Gaston, member of Co. F, Third Wisconsin Regiment, was laid to rest in a Grecian-style tomb in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick thanks to his company comrades. Young Gaston was born in Berks Co., PA but a citizen of Wisconsin and a great favorite and "universally esteemed." He was 28 years, 2 months and 14 (?) days old.
