Arcadia

Location Details

Arcadia was occupied by soldiers from both sides during the war, and served as a hospital for Confederate soldiers after the Battle of Monocacy. Arcadia, built c.1780, was owned by Robert McGill in 1862. In 1863, just prior to the Battle of Gettysburg, Arcadia served as the headquarters of Union General George Meade, then the newly appointed commander of the Army of the Potomac.  After the Battle of Monocacy in 1864 wounded Confederate soldiers were taken to the house for treatment. Dr. David McKinney, the surgeon in charge of the Federal hospital across Ballenger Creek, was so impressed by Arcadia that he purchased it from Robert McGill in 1865. Arcadia is now a private residence.
