Summary

Democrats or "Seymourites" to hold convention in Hagerstown to nominate congressional candidate. Maj. A.K.Syester, Col. Wm. Maulsby, and J. Philip Roman contending for votes.

Transcript

CONGRESSIONAL – The Seymourites held a County Convention on Saturday last in this town and appointed Delegates to the Congressional Convention, which will likewise meet here on Wednesday next. The prominent aspirants for the nomination are Maj. A. K. Svester, of this county, who has carried its six votes in the Convention; Col. William P. Maulsby, who is said to have carried Frederick and Carroll, which together cast twelve votes, and J. Philip Roman, Esq., of Allegany, who has carried the six votes of that county. Notwithstanding Col. Maulsby goes into the Convention with one-half the Delegates in his favor the knowing ones here predict that he will be defeated. If the nomination was a contract for hard work and poor pay, either he or Svester would be sure to get it, but as the prize is a seat in Congress, the moneyed Aristocracy of the party will doubtless make the candidate as they generally do in the so called White man’s party.
