Summary

Dateline: Hagerstown. Report of the latest news of federal troop movement in Washington County. An advance brigade under Col. Thomas reached Greencastle. Four brigades moving rapidly forward. One will probably camp at the Fair Ground outside Hagerstown on the road to Williamsport. The other three will press southward. Union supporters are delighted at the movement of federal troops. There has been some fighting between the local military and Confederate forces near Dam #5 on C&O Canal when the Confederates tried to destroy a canal dam. Confederates crossed the river at Mercersville and tried to seize canal boats and 800 barrels of flour but were turned back by the Sharpsburg Guards under Lt. Howitt. "Fine fords" have been discovered across the Potomac near the mouth of the Antietam with a perfect rock bed the entire way. Dam #4 on the C&O Canal has been destroyed. Many Virginia men are crossing the Potomac to flee forced enlistment in Confederate army. Various other incidents are reported along the Potomac.
