The Emmitsburg Affair

Summary

The returned rebels of Emmitsburg were given a notice by group of Union veterans to leave town in 24 hours. Rebel soldiers appealed to Capt. Naill, Provost Marshal in Frederick, for protection. This Naill was required to do by order of Gen. Stevenson, but most had left town before time expired. Letter to editor of the Examiner signed by "Discharged Volunteer" gives his account of the incident.
