Last Thursday morning considerable excitement prevailed in this community in consequence of the rebel raid by Moseby and his gang of about 300 Guerillas, the preceding day, on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad at Duffield’s Depot, Berkly [sic] county, Va. No damage resulted from the raid beyond the cutting of the telegraph wire and burning of a few tents, no injury being inflicted upon the railroad. It was obviously the intention of the raiders to attempt a capture of the train, but fortunately, it was half an hour behind time, consequently the expedition failed in its main object. We regret to learn, however, that Lieut. Chas. J. Long, of Co. I, and Lieut. Matthews, Co. F, 1st Reg. P. H. B., and about 15 privates, the names of whom we have not learned, were captured and carried off by the vandal horde.
