Execution of Stevens and Hazlett
Summary
Details of the execution by hanging of Stevens and Hazlett, 2 of the men who participated in the Harper's Ferry insurrection. They were executed at the same location as Brown in Charlestown, but the crowds were even larger. A large military escort accompanied them from the jail to the execution spot. Hazlett died quickly, but Stevens was a powerfully-built man and it took longer for him to die. Both men "exhibited great firmness and resignation" as had Brown.
