A Painful Occurrence
Summary
J. Gabby Duckett, age 20, eldest son of Dr. T. B. Duckett of Hagerstown, "a firm friend of the Union," left home to join Confederate army in VA without father's consent. Crossed Potomac River a few miles above Sharpsburg; last seen walking on C&O Canal towpath "near Grove's ware-house in the direction of a fish dam..." His body washed up at Shepherdstown, a pistol bullet hole in his chest, money and several suits of clothing missing.
