Summary
Announces the commencement of hostilities at Fort Sumter, but laments that the “political evil” of Lincoln’s election could have been remedied peacefully at the ballot box. Except for the Executive Department, all other branches of government were controlled by the president’s political enemies, which would have prevented him from encroaching on the rights of the South. Instead, citizens must now choose to side for or against the government.
